
What I think is interesting is how many people think that somehow “maturity” means being serious all the time. Being mature means you can recognize that there’s a time for seriousness and a time to be ridiculous or to laugh or to do anything that isn’t serious. “Growing up” isn’t the rejection of childhood, and “maturity” isn’t the rejection of indulgence or frivolity.
Sure, a mature person doesn’t stand up in the middle of a budget meeting and start screaming, but neither does a mature person watch a comedy skit they think is hilarious and hold back laughter just for the sake of looking emotionless.
Being mature is about being yourself as well as recognizing what’s appropriate at certain times. It’s about taking serious matters seriously and other matters not so much. It’s about making decisions based on what’s best for everyone, not just for you, and trying to better yourself and others.
